What are CBD Drops?
There are 104 chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant, and Cannabidiol is one of them. It’s better known as CBD, a home remedy used to help ease the common symptoms of everyday aches and pains. The chemical comes from marijuana, so it’s natural to think of it as psychedelic, but this is not the case.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the compound found in the marijuana plant that produces the “high” effect of weed. Cannabidiol is separate from it and does its own thing. This makes it an ideal go-to for those who want immediate relief without being under the influence.
CBD oil drops are created when the Cannabidiol compound is extracted from the marijuana plant and then mixed with coconut or hemp seed, diluting it. The remedy has become somewhat popular to use for things like chronic pain and stress, but it also has some controversy surrounding it as well.
How Do CBD Drops Work?
CBD works like every other cannabidiol found in the cannabis plant. It attaches itself to specific receptors in the in the body, the same ones that things like coffee, chocolate, and opioids attach themselves to.
The human body has two sets of receptors for cannabinoids because it produces some of the chemicals on its own. These sets are called “CB1,” and “CB2.” The CB1 receptors are namely found in the brain, and they deal with the sensations and actions that THC effects. These include things like thoughts, memories, coordination, appetite, and mood. CB1 handles other functions as well, but the ones listed here are the primary ones that deal with being high.
The CB2 receptor set handles the immune and nervous systems. It was originally believed that CBD drops attached itself to these receptors, but now there’s evidence that shows CBD may tell the body how to use its own cannabinoids instead.
What are the Benefits of CBD drops
- Pain Relief
CBD can apparently do a lot for you in the benefits department. Like mentioned before, CBD drops acts as a pain reliever and inflammatory suppressant. Unlike prescription drugs, it’s also a natural alternative. Before human testing, CBD was used on rats and mice in order to prove this. The effects of CBD actually have researchers working to see if the cannabis plant has other components that can be used in other remedies.
- Neurological Disorders
CBD can help with epilepsy and other neurological disorders like multiple sclerosis. CBD drops appears in the medicine Sativex alongside THC in order to create an oral spray that’s used to help with spastic muscles. It is also featured in the medication called “Epidiolex.” Epidiolex helps to treat conditions like LGS (Lennox-Gastaut syndrome) and DS (Dravet syndrome). LGS appears in children from ages 3 to 5, and it involves seizures of various kinds. DS appears in babies during their first year and involves seizures connected to fevers. These can be hard to handle with other medications that don’t have CBD in them. In some studies, people with Parkinson’s disease showed signs of improved sleep and general quality of life when using CBD. Other studies involving animals have shown that CBD can also help with the neurodegeneration and inflammation created by Alzheimer’s disease. There are also reports of it helping to prevent the cognitive reduction of Alzheimer’s disease.
- Reduce Acne
CBD drops can help reduce acne according to some studies. The research isn’t conclusive, but the results do look promising.
Things like inflammation and excessive creation of sebum cause acne. Sebum is an oily substance created by the sebaceous glands of the body. Because of CBD’s ability to fight inflammation and reduce sebum, it’s being looked at as a possible acne remedy. If things pan out, CBD could be used to treat things like acne vulgaris (acne vulgaris is the most common form of acne).
- Reduce Anxiety
Anxiety is a very common mental health disorder, one of the most common in fact. It can be treated with pharmaceutical drugs, but they can have a number of adverse side effects that can end up making things worse. CBD studies show that it can be a promising alternative. People with post-traumatic stress disorder, general anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder have shown improvement when using CBD drops.
In the study involving social anxiety disorder, two groups were used to test CBD–one group received the treatment, while the other did not, and both groups were tasked with speaking publically. Those who received CBD all reported significantly less anxiety and discomfort when compared to the other group.
The study involving post-traumatic stress disorder showed that CBD helped children with their insomnia and anxiety.
When used on animals, CBD worked out like an anti-depressant.
These effects are the result of the CBD’s ability to manipulate or act like like the cannabinoids that interact with the serotonin receptors of the brain.
- Cancer Treatment
CBD may suppress cancer and cancer treatment-related symptoms such as pain and nausea.
Researchers conducted tests on cancer patients who reported that they didn’t feel the therapeutic effects of prescription medication working on their symptoms. They were given a combination of CBD and THC instead, and they said that their pain was significantly reduced.
A study involving chemotherapy patients showed that those who used CBD experienced less vomiting. Again, this was done for those whose prescription medication didn’t work for them. It should be noted that the CBD drops administered was once again combined with THC.
When tested on animals, CBD drops showed that it had the ability to both inhibit the spread of and kill human breast cancer cells.
None of this is conclusive as more research needs to be done on human patients.
- Improves Heart Health
High blood pressure is a common heart problem and a serious one when left unchecked. It can lead to many future issues such as strokes and heart attacks. Research in treating high blood pressure with CBD indicates that it may be a natural solution. It seems to have the ability to lower it. Researchers believe this has something to do with CBD’s ability to reduce anxiety and stress.
A study involving ten men with stable blood pressure showed that when they were given CBD, the oil reduced it. When these men were subjected to a stress-inducing test, their pressure levels didn’t rise as much as they would have without the CBD.
When testing was done on animals, CBD showed that it can also possibly help with the symptoms of heart disease.
What Are the Risks Of CBD drops?
There is research detailing whether or not CBD is safe for adults, but it’s pretty small scale. What little research that has been done concludes that adults handle CBD rather well. No severe or life-threatening side effects have been reported, not even among those who have used CBD in high doses. No long-term effect research has been conducted just yet.
Even though CBD drops does well in general and is considered to be a safe alternative, it does have it’s side effects. Tiredness turned out to be the most common one, but there are others.
Some have reported anxiety and depression, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, psychosis, and dry mouth. There have also been reports of diarrhea and changes in appetite.
CBD drops may also interact negatively with other medications the user may be currently on. The best thing to do before taking CBD is to speak to your doctor about it and discuss whether or not it may be safe for you.
